JOPLIN, MO— George A. Spiva Center for the Arts, a non-profit exhibition, education, and cultural art center is excited to announce the upcoming exhibits “Who I Am: A Queer Perspective”, “Contemporary Locale: Obelisk Artists”, and “Justin Kidston: An Ever-Changing View”.
“WHO I AM: A Queer Perspective” runs from September 6 – 28, with the opening reception on September 5 at 5:30 pm. In partnership with JOMO EQ, the goal of “WHO I AM: A Queer Perspective” is to offer a formal space where queer-focused art is welcomed and can improve lives by making meaningful connections between queer artists and their supporters. This exhibit includes works of art from local and national artists.
“Contemporary Locale: Obelisk Artists” is more than just an exhibition; it is a shared vision of Obelisk Gallery, a well-established gallery in Springfield, Missouri, known for promoting artists and their work, and Spiva Center for the Arts to support and promote contemporary art in their communities. This collaboration not only highlights the talent and creativity of local artists but also strengthens the cultural connections between Springfield and Joplin. The opening reception is September 6 at 5:30 pm and the exhibit runs through October 19.
“Justin Kidston: An Ever-Changing View” features the work of Justin Kidston, a self-taught, Missouri-based artist, known for his ethereal and otherworldly artworks that focus on the push-and-pull relationship of the artificial and natural worlds. His works are balanced between colorful paintings of foreign monoliths and intricate graphite drawings that dive into the anxieties of living in a fast-paced, industrialized world. The opening reception is September 6 at 5:30 pm, and the exhibit runs through October 26. Proudly sponsored by the Churchwell-Hedman Family.
The Who I Am: A Queer Perspective reception is free and open to the public due to the generous support of JOMO EQ. The opening receptions for Contemporary Locale: Obelisk Artists and Justin Kidston: An Ever-Changing View are free to members and exhibiting artists. There is a $10 suggested donation for nonmembers who attend. Visit www.spivaarts.org to stay up to date on events happening at Spiva Center for the Arts.
