When you make your next trip to Spiva Center for the Arts, keep an eye out for these top ten things we think make the galleries so special. After your visit, we invite you to tell us, and especially tell others, what you love and what you would add to our list.
1. It is always free to visit
There is no general admission cost to enter the galleries at George A. Spiva Center for the Arts. Visitors do not need to purchase tickets or pay an admission fee. Those who would like to support the center are encouraged to become members or make a donation!
2. The gallery walls move
Did you know the T-shaped walls weighs almost 2,000 lbs each? The gallery walls inflate underneath and can be shifted and rearranged, allowing the space to change for different shows. This flexibility also allows the galleries to be used for classes, events, and receptions in addition to displaying artwork.
3. Always something new to see
With rotating exhibitions throughout the year, the gallery rarely looks the same twice. Visitors can return often and discover something new each time.
4. Focus on collaboration
Collaboration is a key part of the gallery experience. Group and juried exhibitions bring multiple artists together in shared shows, allowing different perspectives and disciplines to be seen side by side.
5. Themed exhibitions
Curated and juried displays are regularly on view, offering a range of artistic approaches that all reflect a theme through multiple mediums.
6. Interactive installations
Some exhibitions at Spiva invite visitors to engage with the artwork in more hands-on ways. These interactive and immersive installations encourage people to experience art beyond in new ways. These exhibits are typically curated for all ages and allows visitors to take a moment to create!
7. Guided tours
If you would like to be led by a Spiva expert, your group can request a guided tour. This is especially helpful if you are new to viewing art, or would like insight about the artists on display and Spiva’s history.
8. Major exhibitions
The Freeman Health System Main Gallery is the center’s primary exhibition space. It hosts major rotating exhibitions featuring artists with regional, national, and international recognition. You’ll find big annual exhibitions such as PhotoSpiva and Watercolor USA in this gallery.
9. The permanent collection
Alongside rotating exhibitions, Spiva also maintains a permanent collection. These works help connect the community to its shared past. The Harry M. Cornell Jr. Permanent Collection Gallery is where you’ll often find these pieces!
10. Everyone can be an artist
From professional artists with years of experience to local children learning a new skill, Spiva shows us that anyone can express themselves through art, regardless of age or skill. Spiva members come together to create a harmonious and welcoming community for artists and art lovers alike.
