Volunteer Spotlight: Bob Bond – Bringing Art to Everyone, One Conversation at a Time

“Once people walk through the door, they fall in love. Art breaks down barriers—and at Spiva, everyone is welcome.”

Bob Bond’s connection to the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts stretches back decades—starting with childhood art classes and reigniting when he returned to Joplin after forty years away. Now, two years into his time as a volunteer, Bob is one of Spiva’s most passionate representatives, reminding the community that art is for everyone.

You’ll often find Bob at the gallery desk or helping out at events, but his real mission lies beyond the building. “I want the community to know that Spiva belongs to them,” he says. “There are people who think this place isn’t for them, but it is—and that’s why I pushed for having a guest book right in front of the galleries. So people feel like they belong here.”

For Bob, Spiva is deeply personal. “When I moved back, it was like coming home. My parents were supporters of the arts, and Spiva helped plant the seed that shaped my life. You don’t need formal training—just love and desire.”

His favorite moments? Watching guests of all backgrounds light up as they engage with art, and being part of impactful exhibitions like Behind the Mask and PhotoSpiva. “I’m constantly amazed at the talent of local artists—especially the young ones. Their maturity and creative depth is incredible.”

To anyone considering volunteering, Bob says: “It’s worth every minute. You’ll meet people, grow with the artistic community, and witness how much it has evolved over the years—not just in the art itself, but in the spirit of the people creating it.”
